Here's how: Using The Amulet of Samarkand and The Golem's Eye for inspiration, write about the most unique, fantastical, magical creature you can imagine. Submissions should be between 250 to 500 words. We are looking for clear, concise physical descriptions, creature's witty personality, and originality.

NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN, NOR WILL A PURCHASE IMPROVE ONE'S CHANCES OF WINNING

1. SPONSORS: Miramax Books, 161 Avenue of the Americas, 15th Floor, New York, NY 10013 and Disney Children's Book Group, LLC, dba Hyperion Books for Children, 114 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10011. Administrator: Marden-Kane, Inc., 36 Maple Place, Manhasset, NY 11030.


2. ENTRY: Using Bartimaeus, the irreverent djinni in The Amulet of Samarkand and The Golem's Eye as inspiration; (available at your local bookstore or library), write about the most fantastical, magical creature you can imagine. Submissions should be typewritten and between 250 to 500 words. Complete the official entry form below or hand print your name, address, birth date and telephone number on a 3" x 5" card and include parent/legal guardian signature. Mail with your submission to: The Bartimaeus Trilogy Fantasy Writing Contest, P.O. Box 4320, Manhasset, NY, 11030-4320 ("Entry"). Submissions entered without Entry form will be disqualified.


3. LIMITATIONS: Each Entry must be postmarked by November 24, 2004 and received by December 1, 2004. Only one Entry per person. Entries must be the original work of the contestant, must not infringe upon third party rights, nor previously have won awards nor been published. Open to ages 10 to 18. Upon entering, participants must be legal residents of, and physically located within, the 50 states or D. C. ("Territory"). Employees of Sponsor, its parent and affiliated companies, the advertising, promotional and fulfillment agencies of each of them, (individually and collectively, "Entities"), and members of their immediate families and same households are ineligible. The Entities are not responsible for Entries from persons, residing, or physically located, outside the Territory or for inaccurate, fraudulent, incomplete, stolen, lost, illegible, mutilated, tampered with, postage-due, misdirected or late Entries, each of which will be disqualified. Void where prohibited or restricted by law and subject to all federal, state and local laws and regulations.


4. PRIZES: One (1) GRAND PRIZE: The creature of the winning Entry could appear in the third book, The Other Place, of the series. The winner will also receive a palmOne™ Zire 72 PDA, a full set of autographed copies of The Bartimaeus Trilogy and the Entry will be published on the Bartimaeus Trilogy Web site (approximate retail value ["ARV"]: $400.00). Ten (10) FIRST PRIZES: Ten first prize winners will receive a Bartimaeus alarm clock and a full set of autographed copies of The Bartimaeus Trilogy (ARV: $66.00). Limit one prize per person/family/household. Prizes are not redeemable for cash or transferable. No substitutions allowed except, at Sponsor's sole discretion, a prize of equal or greater value may be substituted. All prizes will be awarded provided a sufficient number of eligible Entries are received.


5. PROCEDURES: Contest begins September 1, 2004 and ends November 24, 2004. On or about December 15, 2004 entries will be judged by editors from Miramax Books and Disney Children's Book Group, LLC, dba Hyperion Books for Children and author Jonathan Stroud, who will select the winners on the basis of clear, concise physical descriptions, character's witty personality, and overall originality.


6. WINNERS: Will be notified by mail before January 15, 2005. All legal responsibilities of a minor contestant under these official rules ("Rules") will be assumed by parent/legal guardian. Disqualification and the selection of an alternate winner may result from any of the following: [1] failure of a potential winner to respond to notification ten (10) days after date stipulated on notice; [2] failure of a potential GRAND PRIZE winner to execute and return an Affidavit of Eligibility/Liability/Publicity Release within ten (10) days after its mailing; [3] the return of any notification or prize as undeliverable and [4] any other non-compliance with Rules. All taxes are solely the winner's responsibility. 7. CONDITIONS: Each contestant by entering this Contest agrees that: [1] he/she will be bound by the Rules and the Sponsor's decisions; [2] he/she irrevocably assigns and transfers to Sponsor and its assigns all rights in the Entry, including, without limitation, all copyrights; [3] the Entry will not be acknowledged or returned; [4] he/she grants to Sponsor and its assigns the right to publish, use, adapt, edit and/or modify such Entry in any way and in any and all media, without limitation, and without consideration to contestant; [5] none of the Entities, nor any of their officers, directors, shareholders, employees, agents or representatives (individually and collectively, "Releasees") are responsible for claims, injuries, losses or damages of any kind resulting, in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, from the awarding, delivery, acceptance, use, misuse, possession, loss or misdirection of any prize or participation in this Contest or in any activity related thereto; [6] the prizes are awarded "AS IS" and WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied, (including, without limitation, any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose); [7] winner's acceptance of a prize constitutes the grant of an unconditional right to use winner's name, address (city and state only), voice, likeness, photograph, biographical and prize information and/or statements about the promotion for any publicity, advertising and promotional purposes without additional compensation, except where prohibited by law; [8] the Releasees are not responsible for typographical or other errors in the offer or administration of this Contest, including but not limited to errors in the advertising, Rules, selection and announcement of the winners and distribution of the prizes and [9] the Releasees are not responsible for any inability of any winner to accept or use any prize for any reason.
